TUCKERTON – New Jersey’s sweeping coastline has always been inviting and treacherous to sailors. An estimated 3,000 ships met their doom near its shores. Ship Master, diver and author Steve Nagiewicz will take you on a deep dive into the “Hidden History of Maritime New Jersey” in the Ocean County Library Tuckerton Branch, 7 PM Monday, March 31.
"Hidden History of Maritime New Jersey" is the title of Steve’s compilation of absorbing, well-researched tales of storms, shipwrecks and mishaps at the Jersey Shore from the Revolutionary War to today, the heroism and curiosities that enhanced their legends, and positive outgrowths such as the creation of the U.S. Coast Guard.
Captain Stephen D. Nagiewicz has written five books of maritime history and underwater archaeology. A former manager of the New Jersey Marine Sciences Laboratory at Sandy Hook, Steve has lent his expertise to numerous televised specials seen on Nat Geo, Discovery Channel, Science Channel, PBS and other networks. His blog contains observations about environmental science, astronomy, oceanography, underwater archaeology and more.
Steve is a former Executive Director and Fellow of the Explorers Club, Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, and member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences, Society for Historical Archaeology, Nautical Archaeology Society, and Register of Professional Archaeologists. He teaches in the Stockton University School of Natural Sciences.
