☘️ The Irish Maid, Philly's Shamrock Crawl and St. Paddy's Trivia

Philly's Shamrock Crawl is almost here (as in, tomorrow)!
Don't miss out on what will be an absolutely EPIC celebration of St. Paddy's and all the green goodness that goes with it!
First...some St. Paddy's folklore to set the mood (and to impress your friends with what you know while chugging green beer)
Have you heard the legend about how St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland? Yeah, well, legend is the operative word here. The cool, damp climate of Ireland doesn't work for snakes. Truth is, Ireland has never had any snakes (good news if you love Ireland AND hate snakes).
What if I told you St. Patrick wasn't even Irish?! That one's true...he was born in Britain to an affluent family, kidnapped as a teenager, brought to Ireland and enslaved as a sheepherder, escaped, went back to England, eventually returned to Ireland, having accepted the calling to be a priest and eventually a bishop, spreading the word and teachings of Christianity. He made it his mission to convert as many Irish people as he could to Christianity (many Irish at the time were pagans) and is believed to have baptized thousands of people in Ireland.
What about that shamrock? Legend has it that St. Patrick used the 3 leaf clover, or shamrock, as a tool to teach the Irish about Christianity as the 3 leaves could represent the Holy Trinity. There's no evidence this is true, but Irish Christians did see the clover as a symbol of the cross so that one's got a bit of truth to it.
St. Paddy's Traditions
Corned Beef and Cabbage - we think of this as being oh-so-Irish but the truth is, the corned beef dinner on St. Paddy's Day is an Irish-American tradition that started with Irish immigrants in New York's Lower East Side, in place of the traditional Irish bacon dinner (this was to save money).
Drinking Guinness - always popular in Ireland, Guinness revealed to USA Today that 5 times as much of their beer is sold on St. Paddy's Day than on any other day of the year in the U.S.
Wearing Green - Leprechauns are why we wear green on St. Paddy's Day (yeah, you heard that right). Supposedly, the leprechaun can't see green and therefore can't see you and pinch you if you're wearing green (sounds like assault, though a tiny one).
Try This St. Paddy's Day Cocktail: The Irish Maid
Delicious and traditional, consider this your liquid pot o' gold! It's light, refreshing and easy to make.
Here's what you need:
- 2 ounces Jameson Whiskey (or an Irish whiskey of your choosing)
- 3 slices of cucumber
- 1/2 ounce Elderflower Liqueur
- 3/4 ounce Fresh Lemon Juice
- 3/4 ounce honey simple syrup
- Ice Cubes
- Drop two slices of cucumber into a shaker and mash the cucumbers using a muddler.
- Add Whiskey, Elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, simple syrup, and lots of ice.
- Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
- Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice.
- Garnish with a wheel of fresh cucumber.
- Serve
And now....details about the big day...days, actually (just a note: if you can't make it tomorrow, the crawl will also take place on St. Paddy's Day!)
