They named the church Babylon. Nobody thought that was a red flag.
Every Sunday they set up chairs in a rented school gym. Every Sunday they tear them down. In between: acoustic worship, free coffee, and arguments about what Paul really meant about women. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are three men holding it together inside a church that's coming apart.
Babylon Is An Action Verb is a world-premiere dark comedy about evangelical church culture, male friendship, and the distance between believing in God and hearing back. Written in modern language but Shakespearean meter, the play draws on playwright C. G. Brown's firsthand experience inside the evangelical church-planting world.
The production includes an immersive companion website at babylon.determinant.works, built as the fictional Babylon Church's full web presence with a Plan Your Visit page, small groups, and a Give button. The site functions as both dramaturgy and satire.
Directed by Nhadyne Banton Brown, Woodrow Lee, and Liliana Araceli. Starring John Machesky, Solomon Dobbs, and Phong Le.
