Museum and a Movie: Dia de los Muertos

NCHGS’s Museum and a Movie series showcases independent, international, and historical short films relevant to our museum exhibits and the communities we serve. October 2024’s feature is “Día de los Muertos”, a PBS Artbound production exploring the origins of the holiday (known in English as Day of the Dead) and its revival among Chicanxs in Los Angeles in the 1970s. Emblematic of the clashing and combining of cultures of the Spanish conquest of Mesoamerica, the holiday of Día de los Muertos has been adapted across the United States for its many interpretations: its syncretism of beliefs, the responsibility of continuing traditions, honoring one’s ancestors, honoring one’s homeland, and the emphasis on community and connection during times of instability and unrest. “Día de los Muertos” is approximately one our in length and will be shown at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 PM in the John R. Austen Auditorium of the Sigal Museum.
