Restoring Riparian Habitats with Native Plants

Robert will share his extensive experience planting thousands of native species in degraded riparian zones and offer practical tips for homeowners who want to restore water-adjacent habitats on their own properties. Discover how native plants can help build resilient ecosystems that thrive in the face of climate change. Robert will also touch on the Town of Clinton's plans to restore habitats along the South Branch, a project supported by a recent grant. He will discuss the importance of riparian habitats for native plant restoration and provide guidance on protecting plants from deer browse and other herbivores, selecting the best species, and ensuring the long-term health of restored areas. Robert Lucas:Robert joined Raritan Headwaters in 2022 as the Restoration Coordinator. Before this, he served as the Stewardship Coordinator for the Sourland Conservancy, focusing on reforestation of riparian zones and upland forest communities within the Sourland Mountain region. He has also interned with United Plant Savers, learning about the challenges wild medicinal and edible plants face in today's globalized world. Robert holds a B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles. Originally from Southern California, Robert also spent eight years living in Southeast Asia. He has a passion for food and foraging, eagerly anticipating the arrival of morels, ramps, chanterelles, and wineberries each year. This event, presented by the Hunterdon/Warren Group of the Sierra Club, is free and open to the public.
