Back when the Meatpacking District actually packed meat, Westbeth Artists' Housing was created out of the abandoned Bell Laboratories buildings on Bethune Street. The complex included almost 400 live/work spaces for artists of all disciplines, as well as performance and rehearsal spaces and communal art studios. Like the Chelsea Hotel, Westbeth became a bohemian crucible for artists -- including Diane Arbus, Robert de Niro Sr., Merce Cunningham, and Nam June Paik. The past and present of Westbeth tell the story of what it means to be an artist and the changing role of art in Manhattan.
Peter Trachtenberg lived at Westbeth for more than a decade. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's, and on NPR's "All Things Considered," and has won a Guggenheim fellowship, a Ralph Waldo Emerson award, and a Nelson Algren Award.
Free and all are welcome. The author will read from and sign his book.
