Barbara Shewnack is not a newcomer to the Albuquerque art scene. She is a seasoned, award-winning metal artist and jeweler whose relationship with metal spans decades. Since the 1970s, Barbara has been developing a practice that is as technically demanding as it is visually compelling. Her jewelry work — recognized four times by the New Mexico Jewelers Association — reflects a mastery of fabrication, lapidary, wax carving, cold join, stamp work, and bead work across metals including silver, copper, brass, nickel, and gold. In 2019, Barbara expanded her artistic vision beyond jewelry and into metal wall art, giving birth to her Metalscapes series. It is this body of work that The 8th House is proud to bring to the Albuquerque community this May. Barbara's Metalscapes are metal wall art pieces that carry the same engineering precision and artistic sensibility that defines her jewelry. Each piece is handcrafted here in New Mexico, by an artist who has spent a lifetime listening to what metal wants to become. The Metalscapes on display at The 8th House this May represent a rare opportunity to collect original, locally made wall art directly from the artist.
