Documentary Marie Naaxh: process of making ceremonial chocolate and its history
The Mexican Consulate, in collaboration with Metamorphosis Documentation Project, presents the Documentary "Marie Naaxh",which describes the process of making ceremonial chocolate and its history in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, in collaboration with the National Hispanic Cultural Center, of February, 26th, 2026 at this Center. The Documentary was produced by Metamorfosis Documentation Project, in collaboration with Teotitlán del Valle Community Cultural Center.
Metamorfosis Documentation Project (MDP) is a nonprofit organization based in a belief in the richness and importance of cultural traditions, with a focus on public rituals and dances. The organization holds that valuing historic cultures and ritual practices is essential for societies to heal, survive, and thrive in the modern world. Through collaborative projects with traditional communities, MDP documents and supports rituals and dances within their cultural contexts and shares them with a wider audience, fostering an understanding of distinct cultures.
In collaboration with community museums, MDP documents and produces documentaries alongside related community-based projects. The materials resulting from this documentation are returned to the communities for their use and benefit, while the community museums receive the rights to reproduce and sell the documentaries. In this way, the documentation does more than preserve a snapshot of culture in time; it serves to empower communities and revitalize their traditions.
As an artistic and educational endeavor, MDP’s process is designed to promote respect and support for all cultures. Through public presentations of project outcomes—including documentary screenings, film festival submissions, lectures, photographic exhibitions, web-based presentations, and related artworks—MDP offers audiences opportunities to gain an intimate perspective on cultures and traditions markedly different from their own.
