Oakwood Cemetery 175th Anniversary Celebration October 16-19 @ Oakwood Cemetery Troy, NY


OAKWOOD CEMETERY 175TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, NY, will be celebrating it’s 175th Anniversary with events on October 16-19. Established in 1850, Oakwood is more than a final resting place-it is a historic landmark that tells the stories of generations who shaped the region. From prominent industrialists and civic leaders to everyday citizens, the Cemetery serves as a chronicle of Troy’s past, preserving its cultural and architectural treasures. The special weekend of events begins with the return of the annual fundraising gala, “Evening at the Earl,” on Thursday, October 16th. Held at the spectacular Gardner Earl Memorial Chapel, this celebration, from 5:30-8:00 pm., will help lend financial support to the Cemetery. (Cocktail attire, please.) On Saturday, October 18th from 11:30 am-4:00 pm enjoy the, “Victorian Tea and Lawn Party.” This traditional day of fun and games on the Cemetery’s Great Lawn, will feature live music with the Dave Lambert Band, Trolley Rides through the Cemetery grounds, the Oakwood Cemetery Museum, a Name the Gargoyle Contest (submit suggestions to [email protected] by October 1st), and other fun family events. The Anniversary Weekend concludes on Sunday, October 19th from 10:00 am-4:00 pm with Tours and Talks at the Earl which will highlight the history of this magnificent facility and its inhabitants. Presentations on Sunday include: “Head to Toe: What the Victorians Wore, How They Wore It, and Why It Mattered, a living history presentation with Phyllis Chapman, and a talk about one of Troy’s trailblazing residents, “Garnet Douglass Baltimore: A Son of Troy,” presented by historian and Oakwood Cemetery Trustee Suzanne Spellen. Tours of Oakwood will also be given during the day. Trolley Rides on Saturday and the talks and tours on Sunday are free, but registration is required.
