Jean Rim’s Floral Incantations offers a quiet space for presence, memory, and
transformation. Born in Korea and now living and working in Brooklyn, NY, Rim weaves
the symbolic language of her origins into a contemporary visual ritual. Her work draws
from the protective motifs of minhwa painting and the subtle shimmer of najeonchilgi
— the traditional Korean craft of abalone inlay — not as fixed tradition, but as a living
echo that continues to shape through her practice.
Her Yin Paintings, layered and hand-carved with meditative care, embody breath,
stillness, and devotion. Some are collaged with floral, bird, or mushroom imagery —
references to Korean folk iconography reimagined as modern-day talismans. In her
Yang Series, Rim gathers the carved remnants from the Yin works and gives them new
form — an act of renewal, of honoring the trace, of making beauty from what is left
behind.
Also debuting are newly released limited edition prints created in collaboration with
Ping Ping Press in Cleveland, which extend her language of ritual and reflection into a
printed field.
Together, these works speak of migration and memory, of what we carry and what we
become. They hold the quiet conviction that protection can be handmade, and that
healing is a layered act.
