Flora Foray

We will walk through a rich floodplain and pass by limestone outcrops as we wander around this former farmstead taking in the tiny cliff ferns and an unusual assortment of trees and shrubs associated with the dry-rich forests of our area. On monthly Flora Forays, naturalist and rare plant hunter, Skye leads excursions into some of the remarkable habitats that surround the Capital Region, with a close focus on the native flora of our area. We will range through bottomland swamps and upland bogs and fens, explore sand plains and dry hilltop forests and look at rich woods, floodplains, and riverine islands throughout the area. Topics will range from moss to trees, from cellular structure to full ecosystems, and we will look at everything from wild orchids to parasitic and carnivorous plants to common (and uncommon) weeds. Walks will average around 2 hours and the pace will be a pastoral one, with regular stops to look at plants. Meeting time will be 12:30 PM with a short presentation about the location and what we expect to see. Feel free to bring a lunch to eat as we chat, walks will start at 1:00 PM. Wear appropriate clothing/footwear for going off trail and consider tick protection.
