The Third concert of the “Sounds in Winter” chamber music concert series will feature “A Touch of Woodwinds.” This group is a woodwind quintet of flute, clarinet, oboe, horn and bassoon. This concert is at 3pm on Saturday, February 14 in the Long Room at the Brookside Museum. The event is free and handicap accessible but please make a reservation at www.brooksidemuseum.org.
These concerts are a partnership between the American Federation of Musicians Local 506, which administers the local Music Performance Trust Fund allocation, Saratoga Arts who have provided a grant, The Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum, who provide the venue, the Village of Ballston Spa, who is the fiscal sponsor and The Ballston Spa Committee on the Arts. All concerts are free of charge, making it possible for anyone to attend.
" A Touch of Woodwinds Quintet" is composed of performing members of the Schenectady-Saratoga Symphony Orchestra. The leader of the group is Tom Gerbino, who will be performing on the clarinet. Tom is a well known musician in the Capital Area who regularly performs in numerous groups and pits. He is also the conductor of the summer Gloversville Civic Band and currently teaches at RPI and SCCC. Flutist Heather Chan plays in the Glovesrville Band and also is an accomplished violinist who has played as the Concertmaster of the Music Company Orchestra and in the violin section of the Schenectady-Saratoga Orchestra.. French Horn player, Sue Wheeler maintains an active studio in the area. Bassonist Ed Marschilok retired from the NYS Education Department where he oversaw music education in the state. He has been involved in the Empire State Orchestra and the New York State School Music Association and also performs in many area groups. Susan Kokernak, oboe, is a Band teacher in the Niskayuna School District. She also appears with numerous groups in the area.
The Quintet’s repertoire is vast and utilizes music from the Renaissance (ie. Morley), Baroque (ie. Bach), Classical (ie. Mozart), Romantic (ie. Grieg), Impressionistic (ie. Debussy), Contemporary (ie. Hindemith), and Pops era (ie. Mancini). Their performance might just contain some Valentine's Day repertoire!
