Reading and Beading at the Howe Library

On Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 11:30am-1:00pm, Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site will offer a Get to Know Pinkster program at the Howe Branch of the Albany Public Library. This event is free and open to the public. Join us at the Howe Library at 11:30am, when author Shakeema Funchess will read her book, Parading with Pride: Rediscovering the Pinkster Festival. While the reading is open to all ages, the book is aimed towards younger children. The reading will be followed by time with the author, including a coloring activity. At 12:00 pm, all ages are invited to a paper beading workshop. Join us to learn how to make paper beads and take home your finished projects! All materials will be provided by the museum. Once considered a colonial Dutch holiday, Pinkster quickly became an African celebration of family, community, and cultural identity. These events will introduce the history of the festival before our annual free Pinkster celebration at Schuyler Mansion on June 7, 2025, 11am to 4pm. The Howe Branch of the Albany Public Library is located at 105 Schuyler Street. Schuyler Mansion is located at 32 Catherine Street in Albany’s historic South End.
