The 13th celebration of Lessons & Carols in Kinderhook will be at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, December 21st at the Kinderhook Reformed Church, 21 Broad Street (US Route 9).
Since its founding in 2010, this well-established tradition has proven popular throughout the region, having drawn thousands from Columbia, Dutchess and Greene Counties, the Capital District, and the Berkshires. Included are readings, congregational singing, and choral and organ music of the Christmas season. With capacity limited to 400, arrival by 3:45 is recommended, when extended organ preludes will be offered.
Kinderhook Reformed Church Pastor Rudy Visser will preside. Nine readers from throughout the area will be joined by the Lessons & Carols Choir, an experienced ensemble of select singers primarily drawn from the Broad Street Chorale of Concerts in the Village. Musical direction will once again be by David Smith, also organist for the occasion.
Throughout the service all will be invited to sing traditional hymns and carols. Choral offerings will include works from the 17th through the 20th centuries by Rutter, Lauridsen, Vaughan Williams, Holst, Howells, Willcocks, Morley and others. Organ preludes include works of Daquin, Bach, Brahms, Franck and Reger. The postlude will be the mighty Toccata from the Fifth Symphony of Charles-Marie Widor.
David Smith notes that Lessons & Carols in Kinderhook is “open to all, regardless of faith or denomination. Although based upon that used at King’s College in Cambridge, England, our format has been appropriately adapted for use here in Kinderhook and enjoyed by thousands since first presented in 2010. Once again this special gathering in the nationally recognized beauty of Kinderhook Reformed Church seems just the thing for a late afternoon in the Christmas season!”
Pastor Rudolph Visser observes that "Kinderhook Reformed Church has been serving the community since 1712, perhaps even earlier. With boldness we are now enjoying the fourth century in the life of this historic church. We pray that our Lessons & Carols will once again be a blessing for all in the community and, never more important than at present, bring joy and peace to many.”
