The gladness of the *Gloria in Excelsis* rings familiar in the Christmas season, but the darker themes of the end of life and the need for the forgiveness of one's guilt provide the driving impetus to Franz Schubert's *Mass in E Flat Major*. Within months of completing this Solemn Mass in 1828, Schubert was dead at the age of 31. He did not live to hear this work performed.
Schubert's compositional style, considered a bridge between the late Classical and early Romantic periods, draws out the emotional content of the Mass. Some have observed that the man who wrote it sensed his own approaching demise. Here is an dramatic invocation of Christ's dire role as the sacrificial *Agnus Dei*, Lamb of God, and a repeated voicing of the plea for mercy on the failures of humankind, *Miserere Nobis*, and for the grace of *Pacem*, peace, on Earth.
This performance features Dawna Rae Warren, soprano; Joanne Uniatowski, mezzo-soprano; Timothy Culver, tenor; Adam Zeidler, bass; Jason Metheney, organ; conducted by Artistic Director Dr. Marc Weagraff.
The event will close with a traditional carol sing. There is no admission fee; offerings will be accepted. This program is made possible, in part, through support from the Akron Community Foundation and the Ohio Arts Council.
