Young Writers Take Center Stage at the 2025 Buckeye Book Camp
A Summer Storytelling Adventure for Grades 3–8 in Wooster, Ohio
WOOSTER, OH (May 2, 2025) – Imagination will soar this summer at the Buckeye Book Camp, a joyful, hands-on storytelling experience designed for young writers entering grades 3 through 8. Held from July 28 through August 1, 2025, this full-week camp invites students to explore the art and craft of storytelling—through words and pictures—in a welcoming, inclusive environment that celebrates creativity and self-expression.
The camp takes place daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 621 College Avenue, Wooster, Ohio, with complimentary before and after care offered from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuition is just $180, and scholarships are available upon request to ensure that cost is never a barrier to participation. Families may inquire by emailing info@BuckeyeBookFair.org.
Unlike traditional writing camps, the Buckeye Book Camp brings students behind the scenes of the literary world—from character development and comic art to editing and publishing. Through small-group sessions and interactive workshops, campers learn directly from working professionals who generously share both their expertise and their passion.
This year’s faculty includes a dynamic group of artists, editors, and literary insiders:
Jerzy Drozd, a Columbus-based comics artist and educator, is known for co-authoring Science Comics: Rockets, a clever and visually engaging look at rocket history. Jerzy’s interactive workshops guide students through the power of visual storytelling and help them create their own illustrated narratives.
Kori Frazier Morgan, an award-winning author and editor, will lead fiction and creative nonfiction sessions. As the founder of Inkling Creative Strategies, Kori helps writers refine their voice and connect with readers. Her own work has appeared in Shenandoah, Agape Review, and more, and her upcoming essay collection Why I Dyed My Hair Purple releases this year.
Lillian Mazeika, a Cleveland-based writer and visual artist, will teach students how stories go from drafts to bookstore shelves. Formerly with the Tugeau 2 Art and Literary Agency, Lillian brings a unique blend of publishing knowledge and creative insight to the camp.
Camp Director Kimberly Crislip Jarvis brings decades of experience as an educator, arts administrator, and choreographer. With degrees from Denmark’s Scandinavian Institute for Physical Culture and The University of Akron, Kimberly’s leadership infuses the camp with both structure and a deep sense of play and discovery.
“The Buckeye Book Camp isn’t just about grammar and sentence structure,” Jarvis explains. “It’s about giving kids the tools to explore their ideas, shape their voices, and celebrate their imaginations.”
Throughout the week, campers will create original stories, explore illustration techniques, and learn how to revise and share their work. The camp concludes with a celebratory showcase, where students present their finished pieces to family and friends—a moment that affirms their growth as writers and artists.
Campers bring their own lunch, but everything else—from materials to mentorship to memories—is included. Space is limited, and spots are filling fast.
Register today and help your young writer find their voice, their story, and their spark.
